Setting, in literature, is simply the location and time frame in which the action of a narrative takes place. It deals with the the place and time of a story.

So, when we talk about “settings” in the life changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli we are talking about the location (place) and time (period) of the story.

Where did the story in The Life Changer happen (location)

The story talks about campus Life. Well, different things happened at different times and in different places. However, the story focuses majorly in the Nigerian University system. And it uses one university in Nigeria to represent others and tell the story of the things obtainable in the Nigerian Universities.

The fictional story is situated in a Nigerian campus called Kongo Campus of Ahmadu Hello University, Zaria. According to Search Gate, Kongoo Campus of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria-Nigeria, is bounded approximately by longitudes 7⁰41’E and 7⁰42’E, latitudes 11⁰04’N and 11⁰05’N within the Zaria. The area falls within the semi-arid zone of Nigeria.

There are two campuses in Ahmadu Bello University and they are Samaru and Kongo Campus. The Kongo campus houses the Faculties of Law and Administration.

So, it simply tells us that the location is real. In other words, the Kongo campus of Ahmadu Bello University actually exists.

Simply put, the location of The Life Changer is Kongo Campus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

What period did the story in the life changer happen (period)

Well, no specific time was mentioned as to when the story occurred. Different events happens in different times. However, we are going to give the range of time when it happened.

Since we don’t have the specific period when the story happened, we shall give, at least, the range of time of its happening using the tracing approach.

Ahmadu Bello University was established in 1962 that was in the 20th century. And drawing from the story in the novel, it follows the modern day happenings (the 21st century). That means the story occurred in the 21st century. Now, when exactly did it happen?

First, the use of social media and mobile phones is evident in the story. According to the novel, in chapter 9 in page 72, Salim was on many social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Baddoo, 2go, etc. Meanwhile, the use of social media such as Instagram start in Nigeria in 2010.

Secondly, The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli was first published in 2020. That means she wrote a story which happened about 10 years before the publication of the book.

Drawing from the above analysis, the story in The Life Changer happened between 2010 and 2020. In other words, it is a story which took place in our present age.

In conclusion, the settings of the book is not that clear but with the help of above analysis you can point out when and where the story took place.
